RENO, Nev. (AP) — An idea to attach two Lake Tahoe ski accommodations with a 2.2-mile-long (three.5-kilometer-long) gondola has moved closer to the last approval.
Placer County’s approval of the venture on Tuesday is one of the “ultimate important steps” toward linking Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, stated Ron Cohen, president of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. The Sierra Sun reports the gondola with eight-passenger automobiles could transport up to 1,400 humans per hour on a sixteen-minute journey among the bases of the co-owned, neighboring resorts northwest of Tahoe City, California.
Squaw Valley hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.
Cohen started the gondola path choice and decided on the four most environmentally-friendly options because they were the farthest away from a desolate tract boundary within the Tahoe National Forest. He stated it would permit skiers to enjoy the two resorts’ blended 6,000 acres (2,428 hectares) of terrain without driving among the 2. About 20 percent of the venture might be located on national wooded area land.
Local conservationists had opposed in advance options that potentially could have surpassed through the nearby Granite Chief Wilderness. The mission with base terminals and two mid-stations received initial approval from the Forest Service in April; however, it has to win final approval. Officials with Sierra Watch, a local environmental organization opposed to a similar development of Squaw Valley, said they’d wait to see if the Forest Service proposes any additional adjustments before considering any movement. “Sierra Watch will work with our conservation allies to figure out the subsequent steps in our lengthy-time commitment to protect our irreplaceable mountain resources,” it stated on Facebook. During a public listening to the remaining spring, Alpine Meadows citizens expressed concern about installing eight avalanche exploders close to the gondola.
